The Philip Project
Understanding and Sharing God's Word
The Philip Project is a training programme that aims to train Christian international students and professionals to both understand and share God’s Word. Additionally, it seeks to develop both the skills and character to enable others to grasp the Bible’s message – wherever the student goes.
Why the ‘Philip’ Project?
In Acts 8 Philip encounters the Ethiopian eunuch who was returning home from Jerusalem, reading Isaiah. He asks him, Do you understand what you are reading?” And the eunuch replies, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” After Philip explains the good news of Jesus to him from the prophecy, the eunuch believes and is baptised – and goes home with a new understanding of the Bible, able to tell others about him. In the same way the Philip Project aims to help international students and professionals to understand the Bible and teach it to others when they return home.
The Philip Project includes:
- monthly training days led by experienced teachers with opportunities for students to practice teaching the Bible;
- mentors meeting regularly with students for discipleship and encouragement;
- a weekend away with workshops, talks and fellowship.
We presently have Saturday classes meeting once a month in Edinburgh, Cambridge, Glasgow, London, Nottingham and Southampton.

Course Content
- Bible Overview: the overall story of the Bible in 5 sessions
- Understanding the Bible: how to understand the different types of literature in the Bible (e.g narrative, prophecy, poetry, gospels, letters, apocalyptic)
- Teaching the Bible: training on how to explain a Bible passage to others e.g the big idea, preparing a talk, leading a Bible study, student practice
- Worldviews: Islamic, Chinese and others.
- Integrity in ministry
Cost
UK wage earners £150 for the year; unwaged £50 for the year. This can be paid in instalments. The weekend away costs £90 including travel and resources. We are happy to talk about what you may be able to pay. Some students may find that their church fellowship or a friend can help with the course fees.

Union Hall Evangelical Church, Stretford Road, Hulme, Manchester M15 6DY
The church building is near the Hulme Arch road bridge. If you can see the arch, then the church is about 100 yards towards town from there. It is within walking distance of most university buildings. Parking: There is some street parking on local roads but many areas are permit holders only.

The Philip Project began in London in 1999 and continues to meet one Saturday a month.
The sessions are from 9.30am to 4.30pm at Lee Abbey, 57-67 Lexham Gardens, Kensington, London W8 6JJ (from October to July, apart from February). Interested students are welcome to join us for a Saturday to see what is on offer before signing up for the course – but please let us know you intend to come!

Philip Project Nottingham meets at the Cornerstone Church, 90 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham, NG7 1FP.
We normally meet on the 3rd Saturday of each month from October to July. In February, we combine with all the other centres for a weekend of teaching and workshops.

- The weekend away will be from the afternoon of Friday 21 February to Sunday 23 February 2020, at Carroty Wood, in Kent (about two hours drive from Southampton).
Venue
The venue for the Saturday training days is Highfield Church Centre, Highfield Lane, Southampton, SO17 1RL, which is a couple of minutes walk from the main Southampton University Campus, and is accessible by bus and train. For those travelling by car from Bournemouth or Portsmouth, there is free parking available at the centre and on nearby streets.
