What are New Year's resolutions?

Every year, mostly in the West, millions of people celebrate the start of the new year with fireworks, a party and a list of resolutions or promises to make their life better in some way over 2020. Some resolutions are to eat more healthily or exercise more regularly, some resolve to read more books or invest more time in study. Maybe you've got some ideas of ways you'd like to improve yourself or things you'd like to start or even re-start and the new year seems like a good time to do that. So as we start the New Year, how can you plan a great start to the year and how can we at Friends International help? Not everyone manages to achieve their resolutions but we think these are ones that are both beneficial and easy to achieve with a bit of resolve (determination)!

Resolve to make friends

We think that friendship and community are vital for our health and wellbeing. It is a good thing that science backs that up as well! There are also signs that friendship is beneficial to academic progress if you needed extra reasons to connect with others. We are here to connect you to local people as well as other international students. We offer events throughout the year and we have local people who offer their home and a free meal for you to make memories and build friendships that could well last the rest of your life! Why not resolve to make it to some of our events this year and make some more friends? You can see the latest events on our website here, or all of our events on our app!

Be hosted in a local home with friends!

Resolve to visit new places

We have already planned a trip to Hampton Court in March and a 3 day residential trip to the Isle of Wight in June! We'll have more trips planned in due course.

Resolve to improve your CV

For the first time in Guildford, we are running the Life Leadership Course. This course is for anyone and everyone to develop skills that will help them be a leader even when they are 'just' a team member. This recently acrcredited 6 week course includes seminars with outside speakers from a variety of industries, mentoring in small groups and is part of the University of Surrey's Employability Award Scheme* all for only £50! Click the link here: for more information and to book a place.

* this course isn't just for University of Surrey students, so if you are an international student in one of the other Guildford establishments (ACM, Guildford College or Law School) or an Au Pair, you are welcome to join in!

Resolve to stay in touch!

These are just a few of the many things that you can get involved with but there is much more planned for the new year. Stay in touch through signing up to our app or subscribe to our mailing list here: click me! If you just want to chat or meet someone for a coffee who knows what it is like to be an international guest in another country, get in touch through our website or the app has all our contact information.

Resolve to support a charity!

We try to run our trips as close to free as possible so that they are accessible to any international scholar, student or au pair in Guildford. If you'd like to support the work that we do, please click here for a one off or here for regular giving and put 'Guildford' in the allocation box.

We can't wait for 2020 and we look forward to getting to know you! Have a very happy New Year!
